Tiwanaku

Overview

An ancient city near the Peru border in Bolivia whose restoration is in pretty terrible shape. Most of the excavations have been left incomplete.

What to See

This was a pre-Inca civilization. The most intact artifact is a monument featuring 179 different faces. Of the 179 faces, 178 are said to represent different races, while one is supposedly meant for aliens.

The underground temples have drainage to prevent flooding. They also built an area allowing direct sunlight to reach the temple.

The Pachamama Monolith is 2,000 years old and one of the largest monoliths in the world. Another monolith is carved from grey andesite stone, one of the hardest materials on earth.

A structure that has essentially been left to rot by an underdeveloped country like Bolivia. Hopefully the excavation work will intensify in the coming years.
