Overview
Teos is an ancient Ionian city near Sığacık in the Seferihisar district of İzmir. It is best known for its Temple of Dionysus.
Official Culture and Tourism Ministry material dates the Temple of Dionysus attributed to Hermogenes of Priene to the early second century BCE, with some specialist dating still debated around the late third to early second century. It is described as the largest temple dedicated to Dionysus in Anatolia.
The Visit
On paper, Teos should be a heavyweight site. In practice, too little has been excavated and the visitor experience feels weak. The theater is neglected. The Temple of Dionysus is the one area where reconstruction is visible, with columns being raised again, but Türkiye has so many richer ancient cities that Teos struggles to compete.
The ruins are so intertwined with the modern village that houses sit on the edges and the archaeological boundary never feels clear. Sheep were grazing inside when we visited.
The olive trees, however, are magnificent. Even when the archaeology disappoints, that landscape saves part of the visit.
