Overview
As part of our big Africa tour, we spent about a week in South Africa in September 2023.
Income inequality is staggering, hidden racism is rampant, and it genuinely gets on your nerves. Low-level jobs are always filled by Black people, all the business owners seem to be White. The number of well-off Black South Africans is shockingly low.
Food & Drink
Coffee is surprisingly bad across the board. We found very few places that could make a decent cup. The meat, on the other hand, is not bad at all. Beef sausage was great everywhere we tried it. They season it a bit more heavily than we're used to, which suited our palate, and you really taste the meat.
Tips & Advice
- All the streets and roads are littered with trash. Goats in the countryside are constantly eating garbage. You'd think "Africa, the meat must be natural," but who knows what conditions those animals are raised in.
- Everyone is incredibly slow. Service, orders, everything. There's an unbelievable sluggishness to it all. If you're used to fast-paced countries like Turkey, this slowness might genuinely drive you to a breakdown. You need to arrive at airports way earlier than usual just because of this.
- Despite all the security problems, there were zero security checks at mall or airport entrances. Go figure.
