Overview
This was the city we first visited right after the pandemic. Because we hadn't been able to travel for so long due to COVID, we were second-guessing whether we liked it so much just because of that. Last month we had the chance to visit again, and we loved it just as much the second time around. Walking through the Old Town, getting lost in its streets, is an absolute pleasure. The Old Town section is as well-maintained as the rest of the city's ancient ruins are neglected. Supposedly the oldest settlement in Europe, with plenty of historical structures to back that claim, but most of them are in terrible condition. Their approach to preserving history is only marginally better than our country's.
One of the best cities to visit in Bulgaria. Perfect for a 1-2 night getaway from Istanbul.
Where to Stay
Make sure to stay within the Old Town. Instead of throwing money at overpriced parking lots, you can negotiate with hotels or cafes and park in front of one of them by arrangement. Apparently they don't issue fines as long as nobody complains.
We stayed at Hotel Hebros on both our visits. The building and rooms are in harmony with the Old Town aesthetic, giving you the feeling of living in a place from 50 years ago. The building's history is quite old; during communism, party meetings were always held here and party members would stay on the premises. You might want to pick a similarly themed place for that experience.
What to See
Don't skip the antique shops while walking around the Old Town. They have beautiful historical items. Even if you don't buy anything, browsing through 50-100 year old antiques and curiosities is incredibly enjoyable.
The ancient theater is the most beautiful historical structure in the city, but it can't hold a candle to the ancient theaters back home in Turkey.
The basilica has a Zeugma-like concept with remarkably old mosaics. But again, our Zeugma Museum beats it in every way.
Food & Drink
For dinner, head up to Rahat Tepe. The city views are gorgeous, and the food is delicious and filling.
