Overview
A neighborhood of Ortaca district in Mugla province, where we spent a 4-night holiday at the end of June. We'd been before with a villa stay but hadn't done much beyond a boat tour. This time we explored the surrounding area as much as possible. Not everything below belongs strictly to Dalyan, but here are my notes on nearby places we visited.
What to See
Dalyan Center: The biggest drawback is having no direct beach access, you either need a boat tour or a car to reach nearby coves. The riverside walk is pleasant in the evening, but the mosquito problem is absolutely chronic. You can get bitten 100 times in 5 minutes. This makes outdoor dining a real ordeal, both bees and mosquitoes descend in force during the late afternoon.
Kaunos Rock Tombs: Stunning, and an absolute must-see. Viewing them lit up at night from the town center is beautiful. Our country is full of such surprises, even the simplest small town holds wonders. Find a nice cafe or bar with a view of the tombs and spend the evening soaking in the scenery.
Sarigerme Beach: The public beach here should be a model for every other public beach in Turkey. Even at peak times there's parking available. The municipal facility is well-run and clean. For those who don't want to use the municipal section, there are covered areas with spacious chairs where you can bring your own food and drinks. The beach is clean, the sun loungers are good, and the shoreline is wide. The only downside: the sea was very rough on both our visits. Swimming wasn't great, and it's quite shallow, you need to wade out a long way to find any depth.
Iztuzu Beach / Turtle Hospital: When we visited, the sea was better here than Sarigerme, though it got a bit choppy in the afternoon too. The beach area is smaller than Sarigerme with sun loungers but no free setup space, though there's a wooded area where you could set up a chair. As for the turtle hospital itself, what can I say? This country keeps going because of wonderful people like these. I was so moved during the visit. Thank you for existing, good people. One of the nicest details on the beach is how they mark the nests where turtles have laid eggs overnight and place protective cages over them. This way visitors don't damage the eggs with umbrellas, and the markings help track when each nest will hatch so they can help the babies safely reach the sea.
Kargili Cove: There's essentially no road to get there, past a certain point it turns to pure dirt track. Not a comfortable drive at all. But the venue itself is lovely. There's one private establishment, and you enter through them. The sea was superb. The only issue on our visit was black flies, which apparently never normally occur, a nearby fire had driven them our way. Food was quite good. Recommended for those who can arrive by boat.
Food & Drink
DAC Restaurant: This might be the second most impactful place I visited after the turtle hospital. All the staff are prison inmates. Every single one is working their heart out. For these people, it's a lifeline, a way back. Instead of sitting idle in prison, they're creating incredible value and staying connected to life. I wish there were hundreds more of these across Turkey. Truly wonderful.
