Overview
Da Nang was our next stop after Hanoi during the February 2026 Southeast Asia trip. It immediately felt cleaner and more orderly. Traffic was not remotely comparable. The weather was warm without oppressive humidity, less tropical but far more comfortable.
Arrival and Transport
Domestic arrival was quick. We did create our own crisis on the aircraft: one of our bags disappeared from the overhead bin, and I sprinted out thinking someone had taken it. Another passenger had simply moved our bag to make room for theirs. The cabin crew found it after everyone left. Keep an eye on your hand luggage, especially during the frantic rush to disembark.
Grab is active and cars usually arrive immediately. Drivers who speak English often offer their number for private trips, sometimes at a better price. If you meet someone reliable, that can be useful.
Our onward flight was international, and passport control on departure had a long queue. Arrive early. The airport had an extraordinary number of Seoul flights: between 9 p.m. and midnight on our departure night, 11 were listed, plus several to Macau.
City and Beaches
Da Nang is both planned and unplanned. Roads are better than Hanoi, but enormous towers line the beachfront. They hurt the view and seem to block the sea breeze, leaving parts of the city hotter.
The beach is extremely long. We preferred the stretches farther south rather than the area around Dragon Beach. The sea itself was not a "wow," but the coast can absorb a huge number of visitors and should be excellent on calmer days. Some streets between Dragon Bridge and the beach pass attractive, wealthier neighborhoods.
What to See
Dragon Bridge is not very exciting unless you catch the fire-breathing show. There is little else around it.
Ba Na Hills is worth it for the cable car alone. The ride above the clouds is superb. The summit is a theme park: Disneyland fans will enjoy it, while anyone allergic to artificial attractions may struggle. The cable-car views, Golden Bridge, and large Buddha still justified the trip for us.
The wine-cellar attraction was mediocre, with average wine but pleasant surroundings. We paid a driver 700,000 VND for a return trip from Hoi An and a full day of waiting, so we did not need a tour.
Admission was around 1 million VND during our visit, with a 300,000 VND priority pass. We were warned about huge queues, but saw none between 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The pass would have been wasted. Pick up the free beer vouchers at the entrance; beer upstairs was effectively unlimited with them.
The Marble Mountains were much better than expected and should not be skipped. There are many caves and temples, each different enough to justify three or four hours.
Food and Drink
Bana Brew House had good beer and a great atmosphere, plus the free vouchers. East West Brewing served some of the best beer I have had; the coffee vanilla porter was the highlight.
Nomad Kitchen made very good salads, especially the seasonal salad, and is a useful Western option.
VANDA Lounge at the airport deserves its own mention. It may be the best lounge I have visited. The food was excellent and it rivaled our Istanbul Airport lounge despite being smaller and far less crowded.
Verdict
Da Nang should be on a Vietnam itinerary, especially paired with Hoi An. There is much more to explore around it, and it is one of the better choices for combining a city trip with the sea. 8/10.
