Amsterdam

Overview

A city with a wonderful old town. I just completed my third visit, and all three times I thoroughly enjoyed exploring. No matter how much you've seen, coming back after a long time still makes for a delightful experience.

Alcohol is freely available, weed is legal, yet there's remarkably little unruliness. Everyone minds their own business. Despite being extremely touristy and packed with visitors, the city's size somehow absorbs it all. The historic character is also very enjoyable. Even without entering a single museum, just wandering aimlessly along the canals is more than enough.

Nightlife

This time, we timed our visit to coincide with King's Day. King's Night, held the evening before, is said to be even more fun than King's Day itself, but this year it was calmer. Apart from some action in the Jordaan district, the city was quiet. King's Day, however, was incredibly crowded. Despite the massive turnout, the city's size handled it well. There was minimal congestion aside from a few bridge crossings. We couldn't get into the concert area in the Jordaan district this time because of the crowds. The whole city had a genuine festival atmosphere. I can honestly say I enjoyed it far more than an Oktoberfest vibe. Strongly recommended for festival lovers.
