Prosecco Region (Conegliano, Cartizze, Valdobbiadene)

Overview

Cartizze was magnificent. Renovated buildings, steep vineyards and wineries scattered across the hills create one of the most beautiful wine landscapes we have visited. It reminded me of the vineyard terraces of Lavaux in Switzerland, although the atmosphere and wines are completely different.

The wider Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cartizze is the most prestigious part of the appellation and covers just 107 hectares around San Pietro di Barbozza, Santo Stefano and Saccol.

Exploring the Vineyards

The roads are not especially friendly to pedestrians and the slopes are serious, but walking between wineries was one of the best parts of our visit. We pushed our baby in a stroller, which was hard work but still better than seeing the vineyards only through the car windows. We also passed plenty of cyclists. The local consortium publishes walking and cycling itineraries through the hills.

Valdobbiadene itself felt very different from Conegliano. It was small, compact and well maintained. Wine shops carried bottles from producers across the area, while wineries were spread throughout the town and surrounding slopes.

Most producers work primarily by appointment. A walk-in tasting may be possible when there is space, but booking ahead is much safer. The number of restaurants is limited and tables fill quickly, so meal reservations are equally useful.

We also saw several helicopters above Cartizze and were told that scenic flights operated in the area. That much air traffic over such a small vineyard zone was unexpected.

Verdict

Cartizze and Valdobbiadene delivered the landscape, wine culture and sense of place I had expected from the wider Prosecco region. It was one of the strongest stops of the entire road trip.

My Place Reviews

Restaurants

Trattoria Ristoro Fos De MaraiAug 2026★★★★☆

We had the gnocchi, rabbit, and a salad. The rabbit was well prepared and tasted similar to chicken, although it was extremely bony. What came with it was not oatmeal, as we first thought, but polenta. It is made from cornmeal, though the flavor was still rather underwhelming. The gnocchi was also too potato-heavy and contained very little meat. Being in the heart of Cartizze and not offering Cartizze by the glass was another disappointment.

The accommodation was so good that there was no reason to look elsewhere. Free parking, a complimentary bottle of Prosecco, a beautiful room surrounded by vineyards, and a small but high-quality breakfast selection. Everything felt carefully considered, from the water they provided to the smallest details in the room.

Shops

Garbara CartizzeAug 2026★★★★☆

A small family-run winery with a casual atmosphere that feels authentically Italian. The wines were good and reasonably priced; even the most expensive bottle was only €22. Our favorite was the Extra Brut, while the Col Fondo was the unexpected surprise. They serve cheese and charcuterie during the tasting, but be careful: what initially looks like a small complimentary snack can quickly turn into the full paid package.

You reach the winery via a dirt road, which opens onto a large and beautiful vineyard setting. They produce organically, harvest their grapes by hand, and use temperature-controlled concrete tanks, which is unusual for the Prosecco region. We were told that the estate covers around 1.8 hectares. The vineyard tour spent a long time explaining very basic topics, from grafting to phylloxera, so it may feel slow for anyone who already knows a little about wine. The owners’ daughter led the tour and spoke excellent English. The atmosphere, the setting, and the wines were all very enjoyable.
