Overview
One of Mexico's most touristy cities, which I had the chance to visit for 2 days in April 2023.
The city has seriously insane traffic but is generally safe overall.
Budget
Street shops rip you off massively. Before buying anything, check a supermarket like Super Chedraui to see if they have the equivalent, even magnets and similar souvenirs were much nicer and cheaper there.
Taxi drivers are in full-on fleece mode. Absolutely agree on the fare before getting in. If you don't have pesos, negotiate the USD/EUR conversion rate upfront, otherwise they'll rip you off no matter what. Uber is nearly half the price; use it if you have internet.
What to See
The cenotes in the area are truly spectacular. We visited Cenote Ik Kil and absolutely loved it. If we'd had more time, I would've wanted to see every single one.
Chichen Itza has some technical details that are genuinely mind-blowing. Don't skip it.
If you're not on an organized tour and plan to explore nearby attractions like Chichen Itza, definitely bring food and drinks with you. Once you leave the cities, there is literally nothing along the roads.
Nightlife
Coco Bongo was quite the spectacle. The shows are over-the-top absurd but it absolutely delivers on the entertainment front. Just be warned: it's insanely crowded.
Where to Stay
Our tour put us up at Ibis Cancun Centro. We weren't impressed. If you're considering staying there, I'd say skip it.
