Overview
Freiburg was one of my favorite cities on the road trip. It fits the small, charming German-city format I enjoy most. The historic center is well preserved, the streets are pleasant to wander and it feels like a place where one or two days could pass easily without chasing a checklist of attractions.
The city's official tourism route through the old town covers historic lanes, squares and the small Bächle waterways that run through the center. We enjoyed it most simply by walking without a rigid plan.
Freiburg Minster
Freiburg Minster is beautiful from outside, with far more detailed stonework than I expected. The interior was equally effective. Shafts of light coming through the windows added to the atmosphere and made it one of the strongest church visits of this trip.
Leaving for France
From Freiburg we continued toward Colmar and crossed into France. Industrial structures did not disappear completely, but the landscape quickly became greener, more agricultural and more pastoral.
Verdict
Freiburg deserved more than a quick stop. The preserved center and cathedral made it a city where I would happily spend a relaxed couple of days.
